Keeping young minds busy
Busy Bees nursery in Burntwood opened its doors in January 2005, in the beautifully converted St Matthews church.
The nursery houses eight rooms for children aged between 12 weeks and 11 years. Each room uses the architectural features of the former church such as archways to create sleep and play areas. The large church windows make the most of the natural light.
The philosophy of the company remains the same today as in 1983 when three Lichfield families opened their first Busy Bees nursery, 'to provide quality childcare ...to suit the needs of individual children and their families'.
Today Busy Bees is part of ABC Childcare, the world's largest childcare provider.
The nursery opens from 7:30am – 6pm every weekday, providing excellent care, quality food and educational stimulation. All rooms are equipped with age appropriate toys and modern methods of educating and developing the children. The Early Years 'Chestnuts' room has recently had an Interactive Smart Board installed, aimed at increasing children's knowledge of ICT. The board comprises a workstation with its own laptop computer and colour printer. The facility is linked to the Internet with adequate security controls in place. The children in the room have access to an array of programs in the key learning areas of science, maths, language and literacy.
Another fantastic feature of the nursery is the outside play area. Split into three areas of a soft surface open space, soft grass effect park area and a nature reserve. This secure environment has a good selection of outdoor toys for all ages. The nature reserve area helps promote the science initiative within the nursery, with activities such as growing plants and leaf artwork. Outside play is a vital part of the children's daily routine and individual development.
For school age children the nursery offers the 'Hive' holiday club, running during school holidays. The clubroom has an older feel about it, offering themed events and trips throughout the holidays. As well as arts, crafts and sports activities, the club has a 'chill out area' with computer equipment and games consoles including Xbox 360 and Nintendo.
