Forest Schools come to Lichfield
As part of the Sure Start Children's Centres we are developing two brand new forest school sites here in Lichfield and at Little Aston for children and adults to explore and have fun.
The idea behind forest schools is simple – get children (and adults) playing outside in all weathers and all seasons using basic tools and learning how to play safely.
Children and adults get stuck into building dens, playing games and inventing new ones,
cooking over fires and learning about healthy choices, tracking and trails, mapping and treasure hunts, learning about nature, getting creative by making music and art using unusual materials.
Last year we held a Family Forest Day and Saturday morning sessions for Dads and their children at Beacon Park, to see whether people would like it. The result was so positive that we thought we would build our own sites so that more people could
experience the fun.
Both sites – Saxon Hill Community School and Little Aston Primary school – will be
open to the local community and will feature a willow throne for story telling, a bugs hotel to encourage all those lovely creepy crawlies, lots of hidey holes for children and adults to play in and lots more. The site at Saxon Hill Community School will have paved paths making it more accessible for wheel chair users.
We will be having monthly one hour sessions for under fives called 'Mini Bugs' starting in May. The sessions will have a theme (seasons, forest animals, fairies etc.) a nature trail, juice and snack, and craft to finish.
