A Special Place
The Norman Laud Association began approximately 45 yrs ago when a group of parents of disabled children got together to form a nursery/support group as there was nothing of the sort available in the area. A local councillor Norman Laud heard about this group & set about getting support and raising funds for them, from whence the charity was born.
The Norman Laud Association provides nursery day and respite care for children and adults with special needs and disabilities. They also support their families who cope under the most difficult of circumstances.
Parents of disabled children very often suffer from sleep deprivation, or back problems due to continual lifting of the disabled child. When their child comes to us, parents have a chance to re-charge their batteries and where there are main stream children in the family can spend more quality time with them.
Quote from a Parent of one of our guests:
"Giving 24hr care is physically, mentally and emotionally draining. If The Norman Laud Association wasn't here I don't know where we would be".
Nursery
The Nursery is run by qualified staff and is registered for 25 children with special needs from birth to 5 years. It operates Monday – Friday during term time only and offers specialist one to one input with structured learning programs and topic work.
The children benefit from a broad structured curriculum which includes individual educational plans, physiotherapy sessions and a visit to a hydrotherapy pool. Specialist support is provided by occupational therapists, visiting teachers for the visually impaired, and speech and language specialists for all the children who may require it. A hot meal is provided at lunchtime and we have staff trained in naso-gastric feeding. We visit the Elizabeth Svenson Donkey Sanctuary every week. We also organise a variety of trips around the area.
Many children are with us from nursery, right through to adulthood, in which respect we are unique within the
To sustain the high standards of care that we provide and to further develop our services, we need to raise £250,000 per annum through fundraising.
